Active Schools

Active Schools

St. Canice’s Boys’ National School received their first Active Schools Flag on 17th February 2015.  Rugby legend Brian O Driscoll visited the school on the day to hoist the flag.  It was a very memorable day and it is one that will live long in the memory of our school.

Active Schools Week

Every year we hold our annual Active Schools Week.  We encourage children to participate the many activities that are on offer during our Annual Active Schools Week that takes place every June.  Activities that we offer include

  • Obstacle Course
  • Races
  • Penalty Shootout
  • Hoops/Beanbags
  • Playground Games
  • Skipping
  • Parachute
  • Chinese Baseball
  • Hurdles
  • Jigsaw Relay
  • Target Practice
  • Dodgeball
  • Soccer Blitzes
  • Orienteering

Huge credit goes to all the boys for their enthusiasm and effort during the week.  Also many thanks to all the teachers who help out during the week and in particular to Mr. Power and Ms. Lynchehan for organising the schedule of events.

School Teams

St. Canice’s BNS has a proud history of entering teams in various sports competitions in Dublin.  Some of the sporting teams that we enter annually include

  • Senior Gaelic Football
  • Junior Gaelic Football
  • Senior Hurling
  • Junior Hurling
  • Athletics (e.g. sprints, relays, shotput, hurdles, cross country)
  • Soccer

No matter when we take to the field of sport the boys of St. Canice’s BNS always try their very best and keep going right up to the final whistle.  Some of the children’s greatest memories from school are about the days when they head off to matches on the bus with their friends. These teams are coached by a number of teachers who often provide coaching activities for the various teams both after school and/or during breaks.  Many thanks to all those teachers who give up their time to do this.

Physical Education

St. Canice’s BNS places great emphasis on the physical education of our children.  Children take part in regular PE lessons taking part in a wide range of sports under the direction of their class teacher.  We are fortunate that we have a number of coaches who are invited into the school annually to coach children from particular class levels in a range of sports.  Some of the coaches who visit our school include

  • Gaelic Football
  • Hurling
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cycling
  • Swimming (at Finglas Swimming Pool)
